Highlights of SXSW[Movies](2011)
Little Deaths
Composed of three disturbingly sensual and terrifying short narratives, unified by the twin themes of sex and death.
The use of three directors is a nice different approach. All have ventured into the horror before. The sleek sexiness and violent overtones mixed with some eye catching colored scenes. Should be a interesting film.
Attack The Block
Director: Joe Cornish
A funny, frightening action adventure movie that pits a teen gang against an invasion of alien monsters. It turns a tower block into a sci-fi playground. It’s inner city versus outer space.
Well it has Nick Frost in it and it does have a applied of Shaun of the Dead. Though this time a little more on the serious side. Which I can say is a breath of fresh air from the usually UK comedy/horror.
Detention
Director: Joseph Kahn
A downtrodden 17-year-old girl is sent to detention where she must survive a slasher film killer and save the world in time for prom.
Based on the synopsis it is really simple. Though the it could be a strike of gold. Seems like a mix of the teenager rebellion style of Juno and a silly version of Scream.
The Divide
Director: Xavier Gens
To survive the end of the world...you must first survive each other.
There is not much that can be learned from the synopsis or the trailer. It's dark and has a dreadful feeling. Over looking that he directed Hitman. Xavier did give us Frontier(s). Which is one crazy blood fest film. So I have hope it could be good and follow suit.
Hobo With a Shotgun
Director: Jason Eisner
A Hobo finds himself in an urban hell. When he witnesses a brutal robbery, he realizes the only way to deliver justice is with a shotgun.
What can't be said about this insane Grindhouse film. Once was just a entry into a contest is now a full feature film. I can't wait to partake in the fun.
Insidious
Director: James Wan, Writer: Leigh Whannell
Dark spirits have possessed the home of a family whose son has fallen into a coma. Trying to save him, the family moves only to realize that it was not their house that was haunted.
We've seen this team before hand. They brought us Saw and Dead Silence. Their good at telling a story. So that should not be a problem. The trailer did give me a nice creepy feeling overall.
Phase 7 / Fase 7
Diretor & Writer: Nicolas Goldbart
Coco just moved to his new apartment with 7-month pregnant wife. When the building is in quarantined for a deadly flue. The neighbors became unexpected enemies.
By first glance this would seem to be much like the film REC. Though this time I think it's a bit more of a social film. Providing comedy and some action. Think of the style of Hot Fuzz only on the paranoid genre.
The Innkeepers
Director & Writer: Ti West
Hotel clerks by day, amateur ghost hunters by night, the last two employees of the historic Yankee Pedlar Inn set out to prove that their place of business is as haunted as its reputation.
Ti West is one director who's on my lookout list. He brought us The House Of The Devil. Which is one amazing throwback to the films of late 70's and 80's. Based on that I would suggest he knows a thing or two about the pacing a good story.
